Dunton Folk (www.duntonfolk.co.uk) proudly presents Pete Morton.

Pete is a songwriter, singer and 'folk rapper' with a wealth of great songs and stage presence. His shows are dynamic and intense, while remaining approachable and fun loving. With well known songs such as 'Another Train', 'The Shepherds Song', and 'When we sing together', he constantly tours, either solo, performing his own material or his one man theatre show, 'The Millers Tale with the songs of Bob Dylan'. He is part of an annual December Christmas show with Maggie Boyle and Chris Parkinson and also a traditional folk music project with Roger Wilson. His 'Frapping' (folk rap) technique of marrying traditional folk choruses with rap have been well received and will feature highly on a new CD due for release in January 1014.

Starting out as a busker on the streets of Europe, he has entertained all over the globe with his unique and involving style of song-writing and singing. Pete sings from the heart, delivering songs that tell compelling stories and speak of the human condition from a very unique perspective. With a passionate, strong voice and strident guitar style, traditional songs often rub shoulders with Pete's current writing with remarkable ease. His songs are an unruly mix of humour, politics, love and social comment, wrapping their way around the folk tradition.

Pete has recorded eight solo albums of original material and a project album of traditional songs entitled 'Trespass'. Two albums as 'Urban Folk' with Roger Wilson and Simon Edwards, an album of traditional and contemporary songs with Jo Freya, and a collection of his most requested songs 'Napoleon Jukebox'.

"Such talent in ones so young is endearing anyway, but these two shine in every department" … "So utterly refreshing" (The Topic Folk Club, Bradford).

Life and Times are Graeme Meek (Guitar, Bouzouki, Vocals) and Barry Goodman (Melodeons, English Concertina, Vocals). Their music has taken them to most of the major folk festivals in England, and to folk clubs from Southampton to Hartlepool, Norwich to Bridgwater (and most places in between!). In recent years they have been resident performers at Hitchin Folk Club, itself established over 40 years! Life & Times won the FATEA Tradition 09 Award which…
“…is presented to the act that have traditional folk at the root of their sound and use it to inspire new songs, tunes and arrangements.”

Life and Times’ music has been featured on both national radio and local radio stations around Britain, and they recently recorded the title music for the award-nominated film The Bedfordshire Clanger. Graeme’s songs have been taken up by a number of other singers, including John Kirkpatrick and Carolyn Robson, while Barry’s tune, “Four Up” appears on Ashley Hutchings’ Grandson of Morris On. Life and Times CDs include Charivari, Marston Vale and Where the Working Boats Went.

TREASURES OF THE HEARTLANDS

An insight in music, song and pictures into the little-known but fascinating characters, industries and customs of the county of Bedfordshire. Did you know that midsummer bonfires were once lit on Dunstable Downs? Do you know why Charles Wells gave up a promising career at sea to start his famous brewery? Or that mineral water was once produced in the town of Flitwick, and a highwayman called Henry Claydon once lived there? With Life and Times’ performance of songs about Bedfordshire stories, customs and legends you will be informed, enlightened and entertained. Who knows..? You might even want to go there!

Lucy Ward is an award winning 23 year old acoustic artist from Derby. She plays guitar, ukulele and concertina but considers her voice to be her first instrument.

After winning the Horizon Award for best newcomer at the 2012 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, Lucy’s career has gone from strength to strength establishing herself as one of the hottest performers on the UK Folk scene, pulling a full capacity audience on her Cambridge Folk Festival debut. Recently, her name has appeared on the big screen - she wrote and performed the soundtrack for a new documentary film called Folie a Deux (directed by Kim Hopkins) which premiered in Amsterdam in November 2012.

Her debut album “Adelphi Has To Fly” was released in June 2011 by Navigator Records and was met with widespread critical acclaim both nationally and further afield. She was named by MOJO as ‘Britfolk’s most vibrant and forthright new young talent’ and attracted four star reviews from The Guardian and Maverick Magazine among others.

"Lucy, is a breath taking presence on stage. Her unpretentious outlook and warmth melts the hearts of audiences. Her disarming personality, pitch perfect delivery and the maturity of her songs can reduce an audience to tears, but a Lucy Ward set will always send you away feeling uplifted.” Shrewsbury Folk Festival (2011)

After getting her first guitar at the age of 14, Lucy ventured into acoustic clubs, it was there that she first heard the traditional music that she now loves. Captured by the lyrics and stories of traditional song Lucy delved further into the world of folk music, visiting clubs and sessions up and down the country before getting booked to play gigs in her own right. In 2009 Lucy reached the final of the BBC Young Folk Award and she hasn’t looked back since!

  AltaiKAI
THROAT-SINGERS OF SACRED ALTAI
UK Tour July 2008

Amyr Akchin: kaichi throat-singer, epics, ikili fiddle, bayan accordion
Emil Terkishev: kaichi throat-singer, vocals, topshur lute
Sarymai Urchimaev: kaichi throat-singer, vocals, sound imitation, khomus jaw's harp, shoor end-blown flute, topshur lute
Solunai Sapysheva: kaichi throat-singer, vocals, shoor end-blown flute, tungur shamanic drum, khomus jaw's harp
Urmat Yntaev: founder, artistic director and kaichi throat-singer

AltaiKAI's music is deeply influenced by the mighty Altai Mountains, believed to be the ‘navel' of the universe and the mythical land of Shambala. Formed by Urmat Yntaev to counter threats to Altaian traditions and their sacred land, ‘kai' is Altai's own distinctive form of throat-singing (overtone-singing), a magical technique in which a single vocalist produces spectral overtones and undertones to form multiple melodies. Used in epic performance and in shamanic and Buddhist rituals, this is perhaps the oldest form of throat-singing. Combining kai with sounds of the natural world, a range of traditional instruments and their own songs, AltaiKAI evokes the heroes, spiritual beliefs and landscape of the herders and hunters of Altai. The group has been awarded a string of prizes in its homeland, in the Russian Federation and at international festivals (e.g. the UNESCO prize, Samarkand).
