Clubglobal presents The Vodou Jazz Factory

Clubglobal presents The Vodou Jazz Factory
Barfly - closed 4 June 2008
Vodou Jazz Factory grew out of some conga workshops in Cambridge. The band plays rhythms from Haitian Vodou, Brazilian Candomble, Cuban Santeria and Highlife. We add melodies and jazz solos and we want to produce dance-till-you-drop music. The band is new, in 2008, and this will be their second gig. We are developing some new material to extend our set and hope to grow a whole new jazz sound over the next year or so. We play with a rhythmic and melodic structure but no detailed script, a basic tune and solos from everyone, so no two performances will ever be the same

The influences are from Jane's obsessions with Nigerian bands, Dele Abiodun and Fela Kuti, and from Sun Ra, Art Blakey, Nana Vasconcelos, Paapa Mensah and other members of the Mensah clan.

Newton Faulkner

Newton Faulkner
Cambridge Corn Exchange, The
Newton Faulkner is a 23 year old English singer songwriter with a wistful smile and phenomenal dreadlocks. But you'll already know him as one of 2007's most striking musical arrivals, clocking up a Number One platinum album, sell-out UK tours and a growing legion of passionate fans. This is an old fashioned word-of-mouth success story from an artist with simply stunning songs and an astonishing virtuoso guitar technique.

The Slow Club

The Slow Club
Boathouse, The
It's amazing how music can change a listener's mood. In 1999 people claimed Marilyn Manson's music drove two children to kill at Columbine School (No one actually believed that though did they? .Ed), his music was so darkly motivated, in addition if you turn up The Horrors while walking home on a Saturday night you feel invincible. Whereas if you wake up listening to the wonderful sound of Slow Club, you know you are in for a glorious day. With their blissful harmonies and twee melodies they make a summer's day look surprisingly dull. The duo consisting of young school friends, Charles and Rebecca are just as bright as their songs. Tonight we are sat in the dark dingy setting of musical haunt The Washington yet the couple resemble the mood of a student barbeque. Rebecca, never seen in anything less casual than a summer dress is childlike as she twists her golden blonde hair, leaving Charles to provide the level headed approach. Today with a single, video and tour in the pipeline the band are stressed, although you'd never know it.

Thomas White (Electric Soft Parade/Brakes)
Barfly - closed 4 June 2008
Thomas White first rose to attention with his brother Alex at the helm of The Electric Soft Parade, a band who created psych-ish, widescreen indie rock with beguiling melodies and skyscraping guitars.

They're still going, but as well as well as being an integral member of the family business AND guitarist for Brakes AND a the guitar player in Restlesslist, Thomas White has now revealed himself to be a solo artist and songwriter of wit, skill and imagination. Multitasking, british psych folk and charm. What more could you want?

Chris T-T is an English songwriter. He's made five full-length studio albums, one live collection and a pile of singles and EPs. His current release, Capital (Xtra Mile Recordings, March 2008) completes a trilogy of works themed around London, along with previous albums The 253 (2001) and London Is Sinking (2003).
