Victoria and Jacob + The Pixiphones
Bakers Pub

Victoria and Jacob are from Cambridge, UK. They play drum machine, glockenspiel, guitar, synthesiser, melodica, laptop, and various early learning centre noise making devices, and create the most alluring electro-acoustic, indie-pop music. Already in 2008 they have shared the stage with acts such as Mystery Jets, Broadcast 2000, Josh Weller, Real ones and The Train Chronicles.

The Pixiphones are a local collective of musicians. They always vary in terms of lineup, which makes for an interesting spectacle to watch! due to the regular lineup changes, they have various instrumentation and orchestrations, but the music is allways of the highest quality.

Chris Wood

Chris Wood
Portland Arms, The
The Irish Times heralded Chris Wood as "the renaissance man of English folk" when on his own R.U.F Records label he released The Lark Descending which included the BBC Folk Award winning song One In A Million in 2005.

He is an uncompromising writer whose music reveals his love for the un-official history of the English speaking people. With gentle intelligence he weaves the tradition with his own contemporary parables, his writing has been said to share the same timeless quality as Richard Thompson at his best.

Na Mara: Paul McNamara (guitar and vocals) and Rob Garcia (guitar and mandolin) have an ever-expanding repertoire from lively arrangements of Irish fiddle tunes to poignant songs and ballads for voice, guitar and mandolin. When they played for us in February, we were privileged to hear the first public outing of their new song Solo Por Tres Meses, so we know there will be more excellent music this evening.

Samantha Marais: New to the Club is the fresh young talent of Samantha, who delivers her exotic music, unusual imagery and anachronistic melodies with the innocence of a previous age. "Lighter than a Malteser in a flotation tank, Marais' ethereal vocals (have) weightless, simple beauty." - New Musical Express.

Radio 2's album of the week:

"Anyone recovering from a 35-year coma right now might think that the days of Cat Stevens and James Taylor havent really gone at all. Young boho men with acoustic guitars and no fear of baring their souls; Damien Rice, Ray LaMontagne, Ben Harper (dont blame me for listing these types, Jacks own website does it too) its all getting a mite too confessional at times.

Yet why complain? While the format may be getting a little ubiquitous and a little too comfortable its no worse than the umpteenth indie band that sound like they were freeze-dried in about 1982. Quality, as ever will out, and Jacks got it. Its up to us to make sure that we dont push him too fast. At the tender age of 22 hes already got a fine, emotive voice and an undoubted gift for a heart-stopping chord sequence."
