Emilia Martensson Quartet

Emilia Martensson Quartet
The North Wall Arts Centre Oxford

Inspired by jazz vocal legends and the Swedish folk songs of home, Emilia’s pure, clear-toned, intimate voice brings a wistful and haunting quality to some of the greatest songs of the last century.

With a line-up including cellist Ben Davis, Julian Siegel on bass clarinet, John Blease on drums and piano from Barry Green, this is an evening of homage to artists they love, interpreted through jazz influences and folk filters. Alongside Swedish folk songs, Nat King Cole swing and other well-known songs and styles, Emilia will also be performing her own original work, and a beautiful song written for her by Billy Joel.

Emilia’s critically acclaimed contributions to jazz’s newest stars Kairos 4Tet, both as vocalist and lyricist, have no doubt helped bring home a 2011 MOBO Award, while her distinctive voice led the Observer to claim her ‘The New Face of British Jazz 2012’.

Michael Janisch and the New York Standards Quartet - Oxford

Michael Janisch and the New York Standards Quartet - Oxford
Oxford Playhouse

The New York Standards Quartet delights audiences with its irresistible variations on standard jazz repertoire, including songs from such greats as Jerome Kern, Jimmy Van Huesen and Cole Porter.

Renowned for their near telepathic relationship with each other, the four Manhattan based players have developed their own unique style of pushing the boundaries of jazz.

For this performance, as part of Oxford Jazz Festival, the Quartet is joined by guest bassist Michael Janisch; a prominent newcomer on the international jazz scene and described by the Guardian as "one of the UK’s most exciting new improvisers".

This show promises to be a toe-tapping evening of the best melodic jazz sounds, played live on the Playhouse stage.
