The New York Standards Quartet delights audiences with its irresistible variations on standard jazz repertoire, including songs from such greats as Jerome Kern, Jimmy Van Huesen and Cole Porter.

Renowned for their near telepathic relationship with each other, the four Manhattan based players have developed their own unique style of pushing the boundaries of jazz.

For this performance, as part of Oxford Jazz Festival, the Quartet is joined by guest bassist Michael Janisch; a prominent newcomer on the international jazz scene and described by the Guardian as "one of the UK’s most exciting new improvisers".

This show promises to be a toe-tapping evening of the best melodic jazz sounds, played live on the Playhouse stage.

Individual, inventive and energetic oud player Khyam Allami returns to Oxford with his new project. His passion for music has led him on a remarkable journey from his childhood in Damascus to the stage of the BBC Proms. In this new work, he uses the concept of 2x2 (or DoubleDuo) as his inspiration. Khyam’s exceptional oud playing is paired with highly respected Palestinian oud player Ahmad Al-Khatib. Outstanding percussionist Youssef Hbeisch (as featured with Le Trio Joubran) is paired with Italian frame drum master Andrea Piccioni. The music explores the explosive and harmonious results from oud and percussion playing in harmony and against each other.

After being part of the house trio at the Cambridge Jazz Club for a number of years, John took the decision in 1982 to move to the States. On moving to California, he studied with legendary Joe Henderson, and his career began to take off as he played with leading West Coast players such as Randy Masters, Larry Grenadier, Jeff Ballard, Donny McCaslin, Eddie Marshall, and gigged with notables including Eddie Henderson, Red Holloway, John Handy, Richie Cole.

In the UK, he has featured in groups led by Iain Ballamy, Art Themen, Clark Tracey, Alan Barnes, Don Weller, John Etheridge, and worked with Art Farmer, Conte Condoli, Freddie Hubbard, Buddy de Franco/Terry Gibbs, and more. One of THE top pianists working in jazz... one not to miss!

Direct to you from New York City, The Spin Club are delighted to welcome alto saxophonist/composer Will Vinson with his New York band. Since his arrival on the scene, he has appeared and/or recorded with Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Ari Hoenig, Marcus Gilmore, and many others. Will is a member of a number of leading New York ensembles, including drummer Ari Hoenig’s Punk Bop, Pedro Giraudo’s Mr. Vivo, an Argentine Jazz ensemble with 3 CD’s under its belt, and guitarist/ composer Jonathan Kreisberg's Quintet and Quartet (The South Of Everywhere - 2007, Shadowless - 2010).

Will's saxophone playing is executed with incredible power and dramatic sensitivity, and is characterized by his imposing sound and technique; influenced by saxophonists from Cannonball to Chris Potter, he nevertheless brings his own unique approach to every performance. Will's writing, and the playing of his colleagues, combines a great respect for the century-long jazz tradition with explorations into the rhythmic, harmonic and melodic realms of contemporary forms. A great night at the Spin beckons.

American trumpeter and composer Andre Canniere has worked with artists such as Maria Schneider, Bjorkestra, Donny McCaslin and Darcy James Argue. He has appeared on stage at Carnegie Hall, Birdland, Symphony Space and The Jazz Gallery and has toured widely throughout the United States and Europe, including performances at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival, Hague Jazz Festival, BimHuis in Amsterdam and the Rochester International Jazz Festival. In 2008 Andre relocated from New York to London where his profile is steadily rising, both as a leader and a collaborator. Aside from performing with his own group, he has also worked with Lizzy Parks, Nostalgia 77, Ingrid Laubrock, Jasper Hoiby, at venues such as Blackheath Concert Halls, The Vortex, Pizza Express and The 606 Club.

Canniere’s first solo recording was released in 2006 on Omatic Records and he has appeared on numerous recordings as a session musician. A new album of original music is due for release in January 2012 on the London-based jazz label, Whirlwind Recordings.
