Flower-Corsano Duo

Flower-Corsano Duo
Portland Arms, The
FLOWER-CORSANO DUO
An acutely musical collaboration between kinetic drummer Chris Corsano and Vibracathedral Orchestra's Mick Flower on shaahi baaja (Japanese banjo). As a two-piece they conjure, sweat and divine a music that elevates through rhythm and ecstatic harmonics. It's a sound that's intimate and epic, raw and tender, it can rumble like a looming thunderstorm but contains exquisite raindrop touches. The dynamic is great. Eastern harmonics laced with a thrilling sense of noise and melody. An explosive sight/sound that shudders the body and colours the mind.

TWENTY-THREE HANGING TREES
Clanking guitar blues from one of critically acclaimed Cambridge panoramicists Fuzzy Lights.

Peter Broderick

Peter Broderick
Portland Arms, The
PETER BRODERICK
One of 2008's most sublime records was Peter Broderick's 'Home', a delicate, multi-faceted crystalline thing of beauty. Originally from Portland, Oregon, Broderick played violin, banjo, musical saw, mandolin, etc with artists such as M. Ward, Zooey Deschanel, and Dolorean, before moving to Denmark to join Efterklang. Whilst there he began working on his own music, releasing a mini album of solo piano music, 'Docile', on Kning Disk, and a full length album of piano and string compositions, 'Float',on Type. 'Home', released on Type and Bella Union, is Broderick's first record of songs. Combining arpeggiated guitar, hushed multi-tracked vocals, distant strings and found sounds the album is a totally enveloping soundtrack to patient yearning, full of subtly celestial moments. Its broad palette takes in elements of Steve Reich, Iron & Wine, Xela, Mark Kozelek and John Taverner to create a sound of refined astral folk clarity.

C JOYNES & THE RESTLESS DEAD
Heavy thumb-led finger-picking techniques that hark back to traditional country-blues and early ragtime, venturing off to explore alternative melodic traditions. Joynes will be teaming up with some fellow outer thinkers for the Restless Dead's second outing.

CATRIONA IRVING
A welcome return to our favourite London/Cambridge pop-folk chanteuse. Last seen playing with Espers at CB2 in 2005, she has since been garnering unanimous praise for her 7" releases on neednowater, and leaving audiences across the capital in a state of stunned awe.

A Crushing Death & Grief Gig, see www.crushingdeath.com for further details and advance booking.

Max Tundra

Soul Tree
Max Tundra
Six years in the making, Max Tundra's latest album 'Parallax Error Beheads You' is the craziest, most accomplished jumble of genres and chord changes he has ever created. Effortlessly warping together electronic and dance genres with a soul of pure pop, the result is a bit like Yellow Magic Orchestra, Scritti Politti and Steely Dan being remixed by Mouse on Mars. Ben Jacobs forces more ideas into four epic minutes than most bands have in an entire album.

Recently seen at the Corn Exchange in support of Hot Chip, and making an overdue return to Bad Timing, expect an awesome solo show that showcases his talents as a vocalist and musician in a completely engaging and fun performance (which may or may not include that KLF cover).

Ben Butler and mouse pad
Ben Butler makes bizarrely funky rhythmic 256-colour electro pop with the likes of 1970s studio megalomaniacs such as Vangelis, Alan Parsons, or even ELO stashed in its record collection. BB&MP is the new project of Joe Howe (Gay Against You, Germlin) seen in Cambridge alongside the likes of DJ Scotch Egg, Kevin Blechdom and Ove Naxx. His newest alter-ego comes out of recent time in Berlin collaborating with Momus. Word is that the Ben Butler live experience is even better than G vs Y!

'[like] the shy hyper-intelligent cousin of a couple of popular French dance acts also raised on unhealthy doses of weirdo synth music, experimental disco and coffee black like sin' www.20jazzfunkgreats.co.uk

Um
(gagarin, tripel, strange lights)
'Junk shop electronica from a one man mind mental, there's some seriously barmy, disjointed vibes bouncing around in these bendy but catchy grooves. John Callahan, early Baby Bird, Wevie Stonder, Felix Kubin ... are handy reference points.' Norman Records
