Every Thursday evening in March you’ll get a chance to see the cream of the local music crop in the contest heats at The Portland Arms. Your vote will help us decide which band bags that plum spot on the main stage at Strawberry Fair this year.

The Contest Heats are every Thursday in March at The Portland Arms (129 Chesterton Rd, CB4 3BA/ Tel: 01223 357 268). Entry £5. From 7.30 till 11pm.

Derek Nash Sax, Pete Adams Keyboards, Phil Scraggs Bass and Mike Bradley Drums

A vibrant and charismatic performer on all 4 sax’s from Soprano to Baritone, Derek Nash is equally at home leading the award winning Jazz ensemble Sax Appeal to Funky Heights, or swinging his way to best CD of the year 2000 with Spike Robinson.
As a full member of the Jools Holland Rhythm and Blues Orchestra, he has
performed in front of 65,000 people at the Millennium
Stadium in Cardiff & also to over 100,000 at the Glastonbury Festival.
He has appeared live & on TV with with many top performers including Eric Clapton, David Sanborn, Tom Jones, Paul Carrack, Jamie Cullum, Mavis Staples, Will Young, Ruby Turner, Sam Brown and so many more notable jazz musicians.

From North London the acclaimed Eric Ranzoni brings his Trio to Marigolds for the first time. Renowned on the London Blues scene, including a residency at Boisdales in Belgravia, for his tremendous piano playing Eric’s musical talents are second to none

Since coming back to London in 2003, he’s gained a reputation as a skilled and versatile pianist, “equipped” with a warm singing voice. Solo or accompanied by excellent musicians, he’s played the Blues (and Roots music in general) in many top venues in London and about, with frequent stints abroad. In great demand as Blues pianist with several London-based bands, a recent highlight was playing the piano in the UK tour of Mud Morganfield, the eldest son of Muddy Waters, along with Big Joe Louis and West Weston.

Returning to Marigolds after their fantastic gig paying homage to Miles Davis, Rebop play innovative and exhilarating modern jazz pioneered by jazz greats such as Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis and many others.
