The Grisettes

The Grisettes
Barfly - closed 4 June 2008
The Grisettes Formed over sandwiches and tea for 99p in the "wrong end" of Brick Lane was the promising exchange of names (fake, in the case of the Rent Boy) and Oscar Wilde quotes between Rents, Spud, and Begbie. With the common ambition of reviving the quixotic Romantic Ideal, in the shape of rejection and contempt for conformation and obsessive eating of literature and exploring towns and villages alike, relationships with the Muses were begrudgingly admitted and the planning of escape began.

In the following scramble to find and collect as many bohemians and enlightened poets as we could, it took a long session of merciless tickling of Tommy before she gave up her skill in saxophone, piano, and all round art. Although all multi instrumentalists, none of us could play the drums. Hope came in the form of Sick Boy: tall and pretty, with a total lack of self-restraint and, most importantly, her own drum kit.

Stuck with a lack of cash, space, and time... let the new age begin.

The Winter Kings

The Winter Kings
Boathouse, The
The Winter Kings, fronted by Austin Kehoe and Max Delderfield, create lyrically interesting alternative music with an intelligent edge. Their music interweaves melody and meaning, an exploration of tension and resolution, with a live set which successfully runs the gamut from acoustic introspection to alternative rock. Based in Cambridge, England, The Winter Kings play actively on the local scene and have developed a large fan base in Cambridge and London and also online.

The Winter Kings' style is a mix of genres in the vein of Nick Cave, Joy Division and The Editors. Already impressing promoters across Cambridgeshire, they also plan to collaborate with the the No More Landmines Trust, which will include a national release of their song 'Landmines', whereby the single will be sold for £1, with all proceeds used to help the work of The No More Landmines Trust.

The band have been described as, "an accessible, more electric Nick Cave" by Agenda Magazine. They recently featured on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire's The Audio Files and their track 'Fall from Grace' appeared on the cover mount cd of January 2007's issue of Playmusic Magazine.

Ask any kilt wearing Jimmy about Scotland's most famous exports and he'll be sure to say whisky, haggis, shortbread, Irn-Bru and street drinkers. It won't be long before you can add THE XCERTS to that list! After taking Aberdeen by storm the three piece relocated to Brighton a year ago and have been kicking up a storm ever since. After catching the ears of Matrix movie soundtrack composer Ben Watkins, they were whisked off to Ridge Farm and recorded their debut single. (Out in December on Glasgow based indie, The Foreign Office) Citing influences as varied as The Cure, Mogwai and Nada Surf but compared to Nirvana and The Police they combine clean and clever melodies with triumphant rock riffs, a keen pop sensibility and intelligent edge. They've already stoked the interest of a bunch of record labels despite their tender age, and commence their second UK tour this December. And all this before singer Murray McLeod has turned 19!

Dag for Dag are an American Born, Stockholm based Alternative Tropical Rock Band whose delicate, winsome melodies and interchanging boy/girl vocal lines will certainly appeal to fans of Belle And Sebastian and their ilk. But beneath their folky exterior the band have a knack of writing dark, wry, arresting pop songs.

Cancer Bats

Cancer Bats
Barfly - closed 4 June 2008
Cancer Bats have come to destroy. Fueled by a burning desire to rage harder, play louder and have more fun than any other band, Cancer Bats mix hardcore, southern metal and punk rock into a lethal rock and roll explosion.

The band originated in May of 2004 with singer Liam Cormier and guitarist Scott Middleton, former member of Toronto metal band At The Mercy Of Inspiration. The two wanted to form a project that combined their favorite parts of bands like Refused, Black flag, Led Zeppelin and Down, among others. The lineup was rounded out with the addition of Andrew McCracken on bass and Mike Peters on drums.

The four-piece wasted no time writing and recording songs for a self-released EP that first saw light in January of 2005. With hundreds of shows, and many epic tours under their belts, Cancer Bats are eager to party in every city, town and metropolis that will have them. Cancer Bats' long anticipated first full-length record BIRTHING THE GIANT is out NOW
