Elgar’s 'The Dream of Gerontius'

The Dream of Gerontius, is widely regarded as Elgar's finest choral work, and some consider it his masterpiece. The work calls for a large orchestra, double chorus with semi chorus, and three soloists. The performance will be sung by some of Cambridgeshire's finest choral resources combining Ely Choral Society, the Cambridgeshire Choral Society and Ely Consort.

Prepare to be transported to another world…

Linton Music Society is delighted to welcome the renowned vocal group, the Armonico Consort, for the last concert in the current season, Glory of Old England.

The Armonico Consort transports audiences to another world with polyphony and chant by Tallis and Byrd, plus some more light-hearted music from the last 500 years, including close harmony and folk songs.

Atmospheric and full of magical musical moments, concerts from the Armonico Consort have been a sensation at every major music festival across the country.

Building on the success of previous Choral Days, Histon-based Choir 2000 is again offering an opportunity to study Mozart's beautiful Vesperae Solennes de Confessore under the skilled direction of David Hill who, although of international fame, is still closely connected to this area.

David Hill is widely respected as both a choral and orchestral conductor in this country and abroad. At present he is the Chief Conductor of the BBC Singers, Musical Director of the Bach Choir, Music Director of the Leeds Philharmonic Society and Chief Conductor of The Southern Sinfonia.

The day will start at 9.30am with a short warm-up piece, 'Hamba Lulu' before moving on to the main work. We finish with a 'performance' open to the public free of charge at around 4.30pm. The day will finish at around 5.15pm.

We also arrange a lunchtime hog roast at a local pub if there is sufficient interest.

Some background information: This solemn mass was meant to be sung for the installation of Archduke Rudolph, Beethoven's patron, in 1819. The precision by which Beethoven had taken on this task, resulted in the completion of the mass only by 1823. It received much praise after its first performance in St. Petersburg from Prince Galitzin. He described it as 'masterly harmony' and 'moving melody'. Want to hear beautiful music performed in a stunning venue and raise funds for charity at the same time?

Cambridge Water is hosting a fundraising concert at King’s College Chapel on Thursday, March 12, 2009 at 8pm.

The concert is being performed by the Cambridge University Musical Society and world-famous mezzo soprano Catherine Wyn-Rogers. It will feature Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3, Elgar’s Sea Pictures and Respighi’s Fountains of Rome.

The concert is being organised by Cambridge Water to raise funds for WaterAid, the UK’s only national charity dedicated exclusively to the provision of safe domestic water, sanitation and hygiene education. All the funds raised will go to help the people of Burkina Faso where only half the population have access to clean water and fewer still – only 12 per cent - have access to sanitation. The money will contribute towards activities such as sinking boreholes, building school latrines and providing training and equipment for hygiene volunteers. These are tangible benefits which ultimately reduce suffering and save lives.
