Richard Thompson

Richard Thompson
Cambridge Corn Exchange, The
1000 Years of Popular Music

Richard Thompson's fantastic project takes a journey through 1000 Years of Popular Music. The grew from a request to submit a list of the greatest songs of the Millennium. Displaying his trade mark humour in the selection of songs Thompson takes you on a succinct journey from the ballads of the early middle ages, through more modern songs originally made known by artists as varied as Nat King Cole, Nelly Furtado, Gilbert & Sullivan, and The Who. Treating each song as if it were his own Thompson's "mysterious tunings, blunt harmonics and yearning melodies are ceaselessly astonishing, making this as much a journey through Thompson's virtuosity as through a millennium of song." (The Guardian).

Thompson's uncanny genius is evident in his astonishing guitar technique which sees him juggling simultaneous lead, rhythm, and bass parts on the same six strings. Bringing his personal slant to all the songs he presents an eccentric view of the last 1000yrs of songwriting that subtly makes the point that songs are good whatever century they are from. Accompanying Thompson on this tour are Judith Owen (vocals, piano) and Debra Dobkin (percussion, vocals).

"Riveting, enlightening, witty, moving, provocative, entertaining and heartily recommended." (Time Out)

Acoustic Routes Charity Xmas Concert

Acoustic Routes Charity Xmas Concert

Aloneme is essentially three people: the song-writing partnership and interweaving vocals of singer Sarah Springett and multi-instrumentalist and singer David Booth, plus the solid, subtle, often understated foundations of highly respected drummer, percussionist & programmer Simon Edgoose. Recently, this core has been complimented by the addition of the classically-trained Liz Townsend on Cello, Piano and backing vocals. They offer powerful songs, hummable tunes, three fantastic voices blending a memorable mix of bittersweet pop for the masses.

Roots-rock-pop-singer-songwriter Bob Collum, from Tulsa, Oklahoma is a great favourite at Acoustic Routes. He was described by Fish Records as "one of the very best singer/songwriters around" and Rolling Stone said simply "Great songs, great songwriter!".

Formed in 1999 Pavlov's Cat play melodic, rolling songs with the emphasis on dynamics and organic sounds. They are lyrically cynical, occasionally dark but not without a glimmer of optimism. James Hibbins' spartan acoustic guitar and rich vocals are now accompanied by Bernard Hoskin on acoustic bass.

Jade Rhiannon is a singer/songwriter from Cambridge whose music has been inspired by Tori Amos, Jeff Buckley, Gillian Welch and Billie Holiday.

This year at AloneMe's request the Christmas Charity Concert will be raising money for Little Havens Children's Hospice near Rayleigh in Essex.
