The Grisettes

The Grisettes
Barfly - closed 4 June 2008
The Grisettes Formed over sandwiches and tea for 99p in the "wrong end" of Brick Lane was the promising exchange of names (fake, in the case of the Rent Boy) and Oscar Wilde quotes between Rents, Spud, and Begbie. With the common ambition of reviving the quixotic Romantic Ideal, in the shape of rejection and contempt for conformation and obsessive eating of literature and exploring towns and villages alike, relationships with the Muses were begrudgingly admitted and the planning of escape began.

In the following scramble to find and collect as many bohemians and enlightened poets as we could, it took a long session of merciless tickling of Tommy before she gave up her skill in saxophone, piano, and all round art. Although all multi instrumentalists, none of us could play the drums. Hope came in the form of Sick Boy: tall and pretty, with a total lack of self-restraint and, most importantly, her own drum kit.

Stuck with a lack of cash, space, and time... let the new age begin.

Norma Waterson, Martin Carthy & Chris Parkinson

Norma Waterson, Martin Carthy & Chris Parkinson
Sun Hotel, The

For more than 30 years Norma Waterson and Martin Carthy have been at the forefront of the English folk scene.

Martin Carthy is a much loved and enormously influential figure in English folk music and has been for over 40 years. He has appeared and recorded solo, as a duo with fiddler Dave Swarbrick, and as part of bands The Watersons, Steeleye Span, Brass Monkey and Blue Murder. Awarded the MBE in 1998, Martin has been the subject of various TV documentaries and has received a spectrum of BBC Folk Awards.

Norma Waterson, another BBC Folk Award recipient, is a founder member of groundbreaking harmony group ('the Folk Beatles') The Watersons, and a fellow member of Blue Murder. Norma has also been awarded the MBE, and was the first folk artist to be nominated for a Mercury Music Prize when she famously very nearly pipped Pulp to first place.

Chris Parkinson has played music since the age of five, starting with the harmonica, and moving on to piano, guitar, concertina, tin whistle, melodeon, piano accordion and keyboards, and even a little time playing the fiddle. He plays traditional folk music of UK, Europe and beyond, and is also no mean hand at blues, rock & roll, and even a bit of jazz.
February 2006 saw a somewhat historic milestone, it was just 50 years since Chris first played harmonica on stage.

Cara Dillon

Cara Dillon
Junction 2, The
Cara Dillon has a rare talent that you only come across a handful of times in your whole life. Her staggeringly beautiful voice has the ability to reach inside the soul of a song and imbue material with not only profound sweetness but also poignancy and depth.

Cara was brought up in a close musical family immersed in the rich cultural heritage of her native Co. Derry. Having won the all Ireland Traditional Singing Trophy aged only 14, she went on to sing with Oige, De Dannan and then Equation. It was in this band that she met her husband and musical collaborator Sam Lakeman. The combination of Cara’s expressive vocals and Lakeman’s rippling piano and fresh production squeezed new life into ancient material. Their original songs sit happily alongside the traditional, reinforcing the debt they owe, whilst pointing to a distinct and distinguished musical identity all of their own. It was Cara’s unrivalled vocal talent and Sam’s musical and arranging skills that have seen them signed to major record labels since they were 19.

Whether she’s singing native traditional songs of lost love and emigration, or their original compositions, you will be hard pressed to find a more emotive and captivating performer.
