Anne L Ryan - vocal theatre

Anne L Ryan is a charismatic singer whose influences draw on various contemporary and world musical styles, composed and improvisatory, producing performances of profound intensity that can be deeply meditative as well as highly celebratory. Her captivating singing is a celebration of the power and versatility of the human voice. Inspired by the sean-nós of her Celtic roots, with neatly tempered world music influences, she sings both a cappella works and with accompaniments - electro-acoustic soundscapes, quartz crystal sound bowl, electronic sound diffusion and acoustic instruments.

Ciarafest 12

Ciarafest 12
Portland Arms, The
When Ciara was born back in 2001, things could have worked out so differently. In addition to many complications during a traumatic birth, her mum's pre-eclampsia did not subside after the baby was induced, leaving both mother and daughter in serious danger. Baby Ciara suffered complete respiratory failure, and doctors did not think she would make it through the night, preparing the parents for the worst.

The family were taken care of at the Rosie at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, and her dad is convinced that if it were not for the skill and commitment of its staff, and the equipment provided by the Premrose Neonatal Support Group, things could have gone tragically wrong. But now Ciara's at school, a happy and healthy child.

Since then a series of benefit shows, under the name Ciarafest have been held at The Portland Arms to help raise much-needed funds for the Premrose charity, so that other families can benefit form the expertise of The Rosie's staff. The shows have raised thousands of pounds, and would not be possible without the free services of door staff, soundmen and the bands, plus the generous free hosting of the shows at the pub, and of course the paying punters.

The line-ups have always been a showcase of Cambridge's finest musical talent alongside some of the best underground artists from across the country.

Ely Consort - Music for Advent by Candlelight

Ely Consort - Music for Advent by Candlelight
Ely Cathedral Cambridge
The Lady Chapel of Ely Cathedral, enhanced by the beauty of candlelight, provides the perfect surroundings for Ely Consort's concert exploring some of the finest choral music written for advent.

At the heart of the concert lie two great settings of the Magnificat for eight-part choir: the first written by the Spanish composer Tomás Luis de Victoria at the turn of the seventeenth century, and the second Sir Charles Villiers Stanford's monumental setting composed more than three hundred years later.

The contrast of old and new can be heard elsewhere in the programme: Rachmaninov's glorious setting of Bogoroditsye Dyevo (Ave Maria) is juxtaposed with Arvo Pärt's modern setting of the same words.

Familiar favourites in the programme include the traditional carol The Angel Gabriel, Mendelssohn's How Lovely are the Messengers and Vaughan Williams' arrangement of This is the truth sent from above.

Advent organ music played by Cathedral Assistant Organist Jonathan Lilley complete this inspiring programme to start the advent season.

Booking Info:
Tickets £10 in advance, £12 on the day (under 16's free), available from Ely Cathedral Box Office 01353 660349 (Mon - Fri 11am - 3pm) and http://www.elycathedral.org
