When Ciara was born back in 2001, things could have worked out so differently. In addition to many complications during a traumatic birth, her mum's pre-eclampsia did not subside after the baby was induced, leaving both mother and daughter in serious danger. Baby Ciara suffered complete respiratory failure, and doctors did not think she would make it through the night, preparing the parents for the worst.
The family were taken care of at the Rosie at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, and her dad is convinced that if it were not for the skill and commitment of its staff, and the equipment provided by the Premrose Neonatal Support Group, things could have gone tragically wrong. But now Ciara's at school, a happy and healthy child.
Since then a series of benefit shows, under the name Ciarafest have been held at The Portland Arms to help raise much-needed funds for the Premrose charity, so that other families can benefit form the expertise of The Rosie's staff. The shows have raised thousands of pounds, and would not be possible without the free services of door staff, soundmen and the bands, plus the generous free hosting of the shows at the pub, and of course the paying punters.
The line-ups have always been a showcase of Cambridge's finest musical talent alongside some of the best underground artists from across the country.
