Lords

Lords
Portland Arms, The
LORDS
When Lords formed in 2003 their mission, if they really had one, was simply to rebel against the trend for angst and catharsis in punk rock and return to playing music that allowed for communal release and a collective party experience for both band and audience. Simply put, like ZZ Top with Elvin Jones on drums - good vibes played at high volume. Eschewing the traditional guitar-bass-drums format for a power trio, Lords deploy secret ampage to fashion the bottom end of a volley of basses from two conventional guitars, with a cataclysm of drummery sending the whole shebang into 100% party territory. Debut LP "This Ain't A Hate Thing, It's A Love Thing" came out in 2006 to great acclaim and follow-up "Everyone Is People" is due to be released at the beginning of Oct this year. Expect a combination of stupid music done clever and clever music done stupid.

BLAKLAVA
Super-heavy hooks from the heart of the Fens. Somewhere between bad milk and good sex - 3 long riffs played through an amp on its edge being pounded by drums and splendid chimes. Formerly known as Righteous Bastards, Blaklava are Tony Martin's favourite band.

C JOYNES & THE RESTLESS DEAD
Histon's C. Joynes is a master of heavy thumb-led finger-picking techniques that hark back to traditional country-blues, early ragtime, English folk-tune, North and West African music and elements of classical Indian music. Tonight, however, Joynes goes HEAVY, plugging into electricity for, possibly, the first time in public. The results will, inevitably, cause lasting effects on the parietal cortex.

The Stranglers

The Stranglers
Cambridge Corn Exchange, The
With 32 top 40 hits spanning over 4 decades and numerous gold and platinum albums, The Stranglers remain true to form. First gigging in 1975, the band's straight talking approach was sometimes interpreted as aggressive and confrontational but, if truth be known, they were more musically gifted than many of their peers. Nevertheless, their notoriety was embraced by the punk movement of 1977, breaking the debut single Grip, taken from their legendary first album Rattus Norvegicus, and launching the band into public consciousness from thereon in. They have now embarked upon a new Greatest Hits Tour.

The Federals

The Federals
Barfly - closed 4 June 2008
Formed in a garage, The Feds play energetic 60's style trashy youth garage described as the soundtrack to THE REVOLUTION! Sounding like The Who, The Stooges and The Kinks, they bring an old style into a modern age. With the worlds smallest drummer and a singer who sounds like he's smoking 100 a day this band has been described as the hippest new band in York without even realising it.

The Grisettes

The Grisettes
Barfly - closed 4 June 2008
The Grisettes Formed over sandwiches and tea for 99p in the "wrong end" of Brick Lane was the promising exchange of names (fake, in the case of the Rent Boy) and Oscar Wilde quotes between Rents, Spud, and Begbie. With the common ambition of reviving the quixotic Romantic Ideal, in the shape of rejection and contempt for conformation and obsessive eating of literature and exploring towns and villages alike, relationships with the Muses were begrudgingly admitted and the planning of escape began.

In the following scramble to find and collect as many bohemians and enlightened poets as we could, it took a long session of merciless tickling of Tommy before she gave up her skill in saxophone, piano, and all round art. Although all multi instrumentalists, none of us could play the drums. Hope came in the form of Sick Boy: tall and pretty, with a total lack of self-restraint and, most importantly, her own drum kit.

Stuck with a lack of cash, space, and time... let the new age begin.
