The Radio Ballads- The Ballad of the Big Ships

The Ballad of the Big Ships explores the relationship between the shipbuilders of Newcastle and Glasgow and the vessels they made. They describe the brutal reality of the conditions they worked in, but also their pride at building ocean-going liners that were things of beauty. There's also an insight into the camaraderie and jokes that kept the shipbuilders going, and the terrible injuries and illnesses that went with the job. The Ballad is a journey in words and music exploring the relationship between men and their ships, illustrated with beautifully-written songs.

The Enemy That Lives Within - Radio Ballads

Part of the BBC Radio 2 2006 Radio Ballads documentary series. In the late 1950s Ewan MacColl and Charles Parker produced a series of groundbreaking documentaries called the BBC Radio Ballads, broadcast on the BBC Home Service. They were masterpieces of radio, weaving the voices of rarely-heard communities with songs written from and about the recorded experiences of the interviewees.

In 2006 a second series was recorded, written and produced by John Leonard and John Tams and was broadcast on BBC Radio 2. The new series, expertly created, featured specially composed songs and interviews with those affected by a variety of current social and political issues.

Songs of the Radio Ballads

A special album of ‘songs only’ from the BBC Radio 2 documentary series The 2006 Radio Ballads – a stand-alone companion piece to the six-CD Radio Ballads collection which has been released over the past quarter by Gott Discs. The documentary series was built on interviews about issues of our time – hunting with hounds, the decline of the steel and shipbuilding industries, living with HIV/AIDS, the lives of the showmen and women of the travelling fairgrounds and how music attempted to heal Northern Ireland’s Troubles. The songs were inspired by and written from accounts of actual life experience, and speech and song were interwoven to create a rarely-attempted self-narrating storytelling style in the Ballads. Musical Director John Tams and series music producer Andy Seward have gone back and stripped out the speech so the songs stand alone in their own right. The twenty songs on this album have been drawn from across the Ballads series and represent just one-third of the songs specially commissioned for this remarkable and critically acclaimed radio series.
