Incredible trumpeter Arve Henriksen and the Grammy nominated vocalists Trio Mediæval come together with a mix of Norwegian folk and mediaeval music, commissioned contemporary music and improvisation.

Arve’s distinctive playing transforms his trumpet sounds, morphing them into other exotic instruments from Mongolian overtone singing, Balinese gamelan to the shakuhachi. He weaves subtle electronics into his performances and sings with an astounding stylistic range. OCM is thrilled to bring Arve back to Oxford following his sell-out gig with Dhafer Youssef for us in 2004.

Trio Mediæval are a vocal trio with stunningly pure voices and an exceptionally beautiful sound. They push the boundaries of their repertoire, giving folk and mediaeval music a contemporary edge through their interpretations and improvisations, whilst paying respect to the tradition of the music.

BBC double award winner Tony Kofi joins Chris Biscoe in an exploration of the musical legacy of reeds virtuoso Eric Dolphy. Featuring arrangements specially developed for this quartet, the repertoire includes music written by Eric Dolphy, and tunes from Oliver Nelson, Fats Waller, Monk and Mingus which he recorded.

The first record by the band, Gone in the Air, is due for release on Trio Records this year (TR578), coinciding with the 80th anniversary of Eric Dolphy’s birth.

Chris Biscoe has appeared as a soloist on more than 40 albums, including records with George Russell, Mike Westbrook, Andy Sheppard and The Brotherhood of Breath. Major tours include Hermeto Pascoal Big Band and The New York Composers Orchestra. Tony Kofi's album of Thelonious Monk tunes, All is Know, was a double award winner in 2005 BBC3 and Parliamentary Jazz Awards. He was also voted Best Instrumentalist at this year’s BBC3 Jazz Awards. He has been featured with The World Saxophone Quartet, Andrew Hill, David Murray and Sam Rivers, is a member of Byron Wallen's group Indigo, and has worked extensively with Chris Biscoe in Grand Union. Bassist Larry Bartley is a leading light of the contemporary jazz scene, features with the bands of Byron Wallen, Ingrid Laubrock and Jason Yarde. Drummer Stu Butterfield works with the Henry Lowther/Jim Mullen Quartet, Mingus Moves and The Strayhorn Project.

If you've ever felt that the experimental music scene in Cambridge was a bit sparse, take this opportunity and come down to Churchill College Recital room for a concert of freely improvised music from the Cambridge Free Improvisation Society. The Society is an informal collective of Cambridge University students who gather to freely improvise as and when during term times.
