A recital exploring Darwin's own backbone shiver and what his work seems to have liberated amongst composers and poets in a post-Darwinian age; how to make sense of beauty and nature; and how his ideas may have affected our understanding of music now. Music will include Handel, Schubert, Finzi and Vaughan Williams (Darwin's great nephew). Ruth Padel will read from her latest book - 'Darwin: A Life in Poems'.

Veronica Henderson

Veronica Henderson studied music at St Catharine's College, Cambridge, and then specialised in the cello at the Royal Academy of Music in London.

Solo work has taken her to Switzerland and Belgium, particularly with the choir, Cambridge Voices, with whom she gave the first performances of Carl Rütti's "Lieder der Liebe". She was invited to perform this work again in 2005 as part of a prestigious award-giving ceremony for the composer's lifetime achievements, and in Cambridge, in May 2007, when it was a central feature of a Festival of Music in Concert & Liturgy at the Church of Our Lady & the English Martyrs.

Last year she performed the complete Bach Gamba Sonatas with the pianist, Ian de Massini, and she has recently performed pieces by Bartók, Martinu, Janáček and Dvořák at Hughes Hall, in Cambridge, and given a recital of unaccompanied works, "Perspectives on the Bach Suites" at Clare Hall, Cambridge.

She returns to her native Scotland to work with the pianist, Katharine Durran, with whom she will be giving recitals in 2008 in Strathclyde, Edinburgh and Moffat.
