Cambridge rockers The Winter Kings are self professed sceptics about the point of band competitions. However, they have entered, and been crowned victors in this year's Cambridge Band Competition which held its grand finale at the Corn Exchange last Friday (the 9th May). Also playing were a sambe band, Thudbox, and funk troupe called The Ridley Bury Experience.
The bands competed for the judge's affections based on the following categories:
Technical Ability
Innovation & Originality
Stage Presence
X Factor (basically a random score for that 'Je Ne Sais Pas'!!).
The audience also got the opportunity to vote.
Described as "an accessible, more electric Nick Cave" by Agenda Magazine, The Winter Kings played set of high energy, moody rock and roll that sat well with both the judges, and the audience, landing themselves the £500 prize money, free studio time, a headline slot at the Barfly as well as a slot on this summer's Big Day Out.
* The Winter Kings will be playing an acoustic set at The Boathouse on Mitcham's Corner on May 25 and they'll be over the road at The Portland Arms on May 29 before playing Strawberry Fair on June 7.
