A benefit gig is being held for Cambridge Modern Jazz Club founder Joan Morrell,at the 606 Club in Chelsea, on 1 August.
Joan founded Cambridge Modern Jazz Club in 1972. The evening will acknowledge her contribution to Jazz throughout a long and distinguished career.
Just about every top jazz musician in the country has played at the club over the past 39 years and many of them are donating their services to raise money for a remarkable woman.
Three star-studded bands will feature many of the friends Joan has promoted over the years:
20:00: Stan Sulzmann, Chris Biscoe, Pete Saberton, Dave Barry, Mick Hutton.
21:15: Iain Ballamy, Nic France, John Parricelli, Mick Hutton.
22:30 Don Weller, John Donaldson, Andy Cleyndert , Dave Barry.
After that there will be a surprise special guest and jam session.
Clubs like CMJC, mostly run by unpaid volunteers like Joan, are very important to the UK Jazz scene offering some of the best gigs to be had. Steve Rubie, proprietor of the 606 Club has very kindly donated the venue for the evening.
