Event details: Pupils of Thaxted School will tonight give the first public performance of this new musical version of The Pied Piper which Quintus Benziger has written especially for them.
The Magic Piper follows the model of eighteenth-century ballad operas such as The Beggar's Opera where new words were fitted to existing music rather than new music being composed to a given text. Quintus has used Browning's familiar poem about the Pied Piper of Hamelin and for the music he has drawn on memorable pieces from Mozart's The Magic Flute.

Over the last two summers some of us have been privileged to see private performances of musicals staged by Thaxted School. We now look forward to sharing with other festival-goers this exciting new production by our local school.
