Comedy and late Beethoven may not seem obvious bedfellows, but the great opus 130 quartet revels in exquisite humour, each movement illustrating a different kind of playfulness. The humour is suspended for the "Cavatina", one of Beethoven's most heavenly compositions, so unearthly that it was included in a time capsule sent into outer space by NASA to convey humanity's greatest achievements to extra terrestrial life forms.
