Event details: The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra are conducted by Uruguayan maestro José Serebrier, who was hailed by no less a figure than Leopold Stokowski as 'the greatest master of orchestral balance'.

Programme:
Tchaikovsky Fantasy Overture: Romeo and Juliet
Grieg Piano Concerto in A Minor
Brahms Symphony No 2 in D

In his wonderfully descriptive Fantasy Overture: Romeo and Juliet, Tchaikovsky uses different musical motifs to represent aspects of Shakespeare's play - most famously in the glorious love theme that captures the young lovers' yearning passion.
The famous drumroll and tumbling cascade of chords that open Grieg's Piano Concerto identify it as one of the masterpieces of the 19th Century concerto repertoire. An absolute tour de force for any pianist, it is played by Lukáš Vondráček, the young Czech pianist, whose extraordinary talent provoked acclaimed conductor Richard Hickox to exclaim 'the boy's a genius'.
A symphony by Brahms completes the programme, the second of the composer's four great works. Written in the 'bright' key of D major, it is a buoyant piece, full of sunshine and good cheer.
