Thaxted Festival: Rossini's Italian Girl in Algiers

Thaxted Festival: Rossini's Italian Girl in Algiers
Barn Theatre
Mustafa, Bey of Algiers, bored with his wife Elvira, sends Haly, the captain of the guard, to find him a glamorous Italian wife. Lindoro, an Italian being held at Mustafa's court, has been separated from his fiancée Isabella; but she is shipwrecked on the shores of Algiers while looking for him. Haly captures Isabella and her companions and takes them back to the Bey's court. The stage is set for intrigue, deception and the eventual triumph of true love.

London Opera Productions
has worked for a number of years in conjunction with London Opera Players who, before they closed, gave several highly successful Barn Theatre performances, their last being The Marriage of Figaro in 2006. We are very glad to welcome back many of the same singers, now performing with equal brilliance for the sister company. They will be accompanied, as usual, by a hard-working quintet.

During a long interval people can enjoy their picnics in the lovely surroundings adjacent to the Barn. Bring your own picnics, rugs and/or picnic chairs and a large umbrella!

Black tie preferred for the Saturday performance.

ARMONICO CONSORT and ORCHESTRA OF THE BAROQUE

ARMONICO CONSORT and ORCHESTRA OF THE BAROQUE
Thaxted Parish Church

Armonico Consort and the Orchestra of the Baroque gave a scintillating performance of Dido & Aeneas as part of last year's Festival. We particularly enjoyed the way they uncovered its freshness, humour and pathos.

The Fairy Queen will be semi-staged and the production will include puppets. We can look forward to another opportunity to relish Purcell's extraordinary ability to combine words with music so as to enhance both.

Christopher Monks, who founded the group, is acclaimed throughout Europe for his imaginative interpretation of Renaissance and Baroque music.

All Angels

All Angels
Thaxted Parish Church
All Angels' repertoire includes favourites such as Schubert's Ave Maria, Barber's Agnus Dei, the Sancta Maria intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana, Delibes' Flower Duet from Lakmé, Pie Jesu from Fauré's Requiem and Offenbach's Barcarolle. They sing vocal versions of Pachelbel's Canon, Nimrod from the Enigma Variations and Geoffrey Burgon's theme from Brideshead Revisited, and also spirituals such as Steal Away. They are accompanied by a small instrumental group.

Melanie, Laura, Daisy and Charlotte are a unique vocal quartet. The four girls were selected following an extensive nationwide search of schools, choirs and music schools. Each brings a different quality to the group: in combination their fresh, artless voices and outstanding musicianship are heart-rendingly beautiful
