CU Opera Society presents Orfeo
ADC Theatre
"Baying creatures of the underworld, the descent Apollo from on high and woven through all, the power of music so beauteous it charms even the gods"
Cambridge University Opera Society presents Fitzwilliam Chamber Opera and Cambridge University Baroque Ensemble in a fully-staged version of the 1607 Claudio Monteverdi operatic masterpiece.

Join Orpheus on his perilous journey to Pluto's realm where he, ravaged by grief, seeks to rescue his beloved wife, Euridice. Accompanied only by Hope and his magical lyre, Orpheus sets out upon a timeless tale of Love so strong it vies to overcome even Death. But will Pluto heed his pleas? Will Orpheus' own weakness prove his very undoing?

As vibrant today as it was in 1607, the world's first true opera bursts into life on the ADC stage in a brand new English translation. Brought to you by Cambridge's finest young singers and a large, dazzling period-instrument orchestra, Monteverdi's music alternately delights and twists at the heart, by turns ethereal and virtuosic.

Paul Hindemith: Mathis and Moerder

Paul Hindemith: Mathis and Moerder
Great St Marys Church
The newly founded Ardente Opera Company presents their flagship production of the UK premiere of one of Paul Hindemith's early operas, Moerder, Hoffnung der Frauen in concert performance, alongside the sublime Symphonie Mathis der Maler, featuring orchestral music from the composer's operatic masterpiece of the same name. Conducted by Julian Black, these two dramatic masterpieces demonstrate two contrasting sides to Hindemith's music: the dark, Expressionist ferality of Moerder, Hoffnung der Frauen and the serene juxtaposed with the grotesque in the Symphonie.

Moerder, Hoffnung der Frauen, based on the play of the same name by Oscar Kokoschka, describes the encounter between a Man and a Woman, accompanied by their respective groups of hunters and Maidens, in a dark forest, ending in the death of the Woman and the the Man's exit through a passage of fire. Featuring some of the finest singers from Cambridge and London, including Johnny Herford and Mary-Ellen Lynall, as well as the stunning Ardente Opera Orchestra, this production promises to be one of the most exciting ventures of the musical year.
